Know STEM. Choose STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These are intertwining disciplines when applied in the real world. This strand is for students who are planning to study Applied and Pure Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering in college. Students that choose this strand also end up studying Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, and Biology. The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands and tracks is the focus on advanced concepts and topics. Fair warning, though, this strand is not for the faint-hearted.

Here are some list of courses you can pursue under STEM strand:

  1. Environmental Science (BSES)
  2. Geology (BS Geology)

Pre-baccalaureate Maritime Specialization

Pre-baccalaureate Maritime Specialization is a modified program of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand under the Academic Track. In this specialization, six specialized subjects of the STEM strand were retained and three were replaced with maritime-related subjects. The goal of the Pre-baccalaureate Maritime Specialization is to encourage SHS graduates to pursue maritime higher education. With this, the country will be able to produce more seafarers at the officer level.

  1. Marine Engineering (BSMarE)
  2. Marine Transportation (BSMT)
  3. Marine Electrician /Technician

My Personal Experience as a STEM strand student

It was my intention to choose STEM as my strand because I want to become a doctor and it was the perfect strand for my chosen career path. I can describe my 2 years of being a Senior High School student having STEM as my strand as a circus life. It was crazy, unexpected and full of wide range of emotions but I can also say that it was one of the best decisions I made for my 16 years of existence.

Throughout my senior high life, I’ve faced lots of circumstances that urge me to give up–to change my strand but I chose not to. Around those years, I’ve faced lots of failures and experienced lots of stress. I can’t even count how many times I failed our exams and quizzes. Those times really got me questioned myself about choosing this strand.

Nonetheless, I’ve learned a lot which is a big help for my next journey in life as a college student. This strand taught me a lot with everything. This strand pushed me beyond my limits.

My thoughts in choosing the right strand

Choosing a strand and track for Senior High School is not easy. You have to consider lots of things like what career path should you really want to pursue. Also, before choosing, do a research about the new curriculum because it can help you make the choice, from the right course content to the outline for each track. Be knowledgeable of what you are choosing because that choice will affect your future.
